Nelson’s BBQ, headquartered in Wakarusa, has been serving Indiana and Michigan the finest barbecued food for over 45 years.
During the Depression, Nelson Gongwer managed a small poultry processing plant in Wakarusa. But his dream was to develop a method to cook large quantities of chicken with the same flavor and quality as what Grandma made.
After years of trial and error, Gongwer finally reached his goal in 1967. That’s when the Port-APit® system and Nelson’s™ Food Service Corporation were born.
In the 1980s, Dean Gongwer, Gongwer ‘s son, managed the family business. Today, Tad Nelson Gongwer is the third generation manager of the family-owned business.
